1945: The "Handshake of Torgau"
On 25 April 1945 Soviet and US troops met at the River Elbe. The next day, commanders from both sides met at Torgau, southwest of Berlin and arranged for a formal photograph to be taken on 27 April to mark the meeting. This image, the "Handshake of Torgau", showed the world that the victory over Nazi Germany was imminent.
