1939 - Invasion of Poland
On 1st September 1939 Hitler’s troops invaded Poland, annexing most of the western part of the country, as well as the Free City of Danzig. After heavy shelling and bombing, Warsaw surrendered to the Germans on 27th September 1939. Initially Hitler had been confident that his invasion would result in a short victorious war, however his gamble backfired when Poland requested military assistance from France and Britain, leading to the outbreak of what was to become the Second World War.
