August 2018: 100 years since the second battle of the Somme
The second battle of the Somme was fought from the end of August to early September 1918 in the basin of the river Somme, France.

While the first battle in 1916 stopped the invasion of the German troops, the second was a counteroffensive of the Allied forces that later resulted in the Armistice of Compiègne on 11 November and in the end of World War I.

The battle claimed more than 20,000 lives of British, Canadian, American and German soldiers.
